New York, Friday, 18, 2024-Sam Altman-backed Worldcoin has officially rebranded as World Network, or World, and launched its World Chain mainnet on October 17, 2024.

The Layer 2 blockchain, secured by Ethereum, aims to expand the project’s mission of providing digital identity verification through World ID.

World ID allows users to verify their humanity via an iris scan, offering a solution to the increasing presence of AI on the internet. The project claims over 10 million signups across 160 countries, making it a significant player in digital identity and blockchain space.

World Chain has attracted notable backers, including Optimism, Uniswap, and Alchemy, and it already represents 44% of activity on the OP Mainnet, making it the largest application on that network. The rebranding reflects the broader ambition of creating a “humans-only” network, where users can save on gas fees and even contribute to governance decisions.

This evolution comes after Worldcoin’s initial launch in July 2023, with the cryptocurrency WLD still in use. However, the name Worldcoin no longer encapsulated the project’s expanded scope.

Tools For Humanity, the project’s lead developer, emphasized that the name change aligns with its vision of a future where verified humans play a critical role in AI progress.

WLD is currently valued at $2.13, down 3.68% in the last 24 hours.
