Catenaa, Wednesday, July 02, 2025-Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday unveiled the company’s new artificial intelligence division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, after hiring a wave of elite researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind early this week.
The move intensifies the ongoing AI talent war and deepens tensions with rivals, particularly OpenAI.
Leading the new unit are Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, as Chief AI Officer, and ex-GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, who will oversee product and applied research.
The lab consolidates Meta’s AI work, including foundational models, applications, and research arms like FAIR.
Their departures have triggered internal concern at OpenAI, with Chief Scientist Mark Chen describing Meta’s recruitment tactics as “breaking into our home and stealing something,” according to a leaked memo.
CEO Sam Altman alleged that Meta has been offering signing bonuses as high as $100 million to lure away OpenAI staff. The OpenAi has also announced that it will go “on leave” next week.
Meta has disputed the figure but did not comment further.
OpenAI responded by giving employees a recharge week and promising recalibrated compensation.
Zuckerberg, in an internal message, called the lab a “talent-dense effort” aimed at delivering personal superintelligence.
