YMTC Defies US Sanctions, Thrives on Domestic Chip Demand

Wednesday, June 19, 2024 – The Chinese-based semiconductor integrated device manufacturer, Yangtze Memory Technologies Corporation (YMTC), has recently announced the surge in demand for its flash memory chips among local customers.1

It is reported that YMTC’s flash memory chips are widely utilized for government and military-based projects.

“YMTC has never supplied its technology or products for any military use, nor have we been directed by any entity to supply its technology or products for military use,” the company said. 1

China’s commitment to developing generative AI has resulted in the demand for locally manufactured units, including flash memory chips.

The price of the NAND flash memory chips has increased with the high demand from local customers.

Thus, YMTC’s product capacity has exceeded with the Chinese government’s favor for local companies compared to foreign companies like Micron Technology and Samsung Electronics.

Soon after the revelation of TechInsights, the Canadian research firm, regarding the upgraded “232-layer NAND flash” of YMTC, the 3D NAND flash memory market of YMTC was blacklisted under US trade restrictions in 2022.

It was assumed that US sanction would be hazardous to the ignition of the local company to achieve its aspirations. 2

Bypassing US sanctions, YMTC secured funding from domestic Chinese investors and proceeded with banned chip production.

The sanction partially resulted in the global race conquering the semiconductor industry between Chinese manufacturers and US manufacturers.
