Catenaa, Friday, May 16, 2025-The United States (US) is warning international companies that using Huawei’s advanced AI chips may violate US export control laws, intensifying its crackdown on Chinese tech developments and extending Washington’s long-standing restrictions beyond physical shipments.
The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security said Tuesday that Huawei’s Ascend processors -including the 910B, 910C and 910D -are likely designed or produced using US technology.
As such, their use anywhere in the world could breach US export controls, even absent direct sales or transfers from the United States.
The guidance does not constitute a new regulation, but rather a formal clarification of existing rules. Officials stressed that companies using Huawei-designed AI chips may need hard-to-obtain licenses, effectively restricting their global deployment.
Officials said that this was not a new control, but a confirmation of an interpretation.
The official noted that even using Huawei chips -regardless of location -could amount to a violation.
This shows US concerns over Huawei’s increasing AI capabilities.
Huawei recently began delivering chip clusters in China built from its 910C processors, which it claims surpass Nvidia’s rival systems in combined memory and compute performance, despite each chip being less powerful individually.
The clarification comes as the US tightens scrutiny on AI supply chains, aiming to limit China’s access to critical computing hardware amid geopolitical tensions and intensifying tech rivalry.
