Catenaa, Tuesday, August 27, 2025- The United States will begin publishing official economic data on the blockchain, starting with gross domestic product figures, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced early today.
The plan was outlined during a cabinet meeting with President Donald Trump, where Lutnick said blockchain-based statistics would soon be made available across government agencies.
The Department of Commerce intends to release GDP data on-chain to improve distribution and strengthen trust in official statistics.
Additional indicators, such as employment or inflation, could follow once technical details are finalized.
Lutnick emphasized that placing data on the blockchain would increase transparency while keeping America ahead in digital innovation.
Although US economic information, including the census, is already public, blockchain integration is expected to provide a tamper-resistant system accessible to both citizens and institutions.
The department has not disclosed which blockchain will be used or when the first release will occur.
Lutnick, confirmed as commerce secretary in February, previously led Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services firm that has served as custodian for Tether, the issuer of the largest stablecoin.
He has been vocal in supporting blockchain and digital assets, calling them essential to maintaining U.S. economic leadership.
