Twitch Tests TikTok Alternative with Discovery Feed

SEATTLE, Monday, May 13, 2024 – In the wake of a potential TikTok ban in the US, Amazon’s livestreaming platform Twitch has launched “Discovery Feed,” a new feature offering short-form video content.

The move positions Twitch as a potential competitor in the ever-growing short-form video space.

Unlike TikTok, where users create and upload their own short videos, Discovery Feed presents viewers with curated clips culled from Twitch’s existing library of lengthy live streams.

These clips aim to capture the most entertaining or funny moments from popular Twitch broadcasts. Accessible through a new tab on the Twitch mobile app, Discovery Feed personalizes content based on a user’s watch history and real-time interactions.

While some speculate that Discovery Feed could be a viable alternative to TikTok, key differences remain.

Twitch creators may not readily adapt to producing short-form content for the platform, and the potential inclusion of mature content (meeting Twitch’s guidelines) could limit its appeal to a broader audience.

Industry experts view Discovery Feed as an experiment for Twitch, capitalizing on the potential void left by TikTok.

Whether it can truly compete with established short-form video platforms and resonate with Twitch’s existing user base remains to be seen.
