TSMC to Invest $100 Billion in New US Chip Plants

In Summary

  • TSMC will invest $100B in US semiconductor manufacturing
  • Five new fabrication plants will be built, mostly in Arizona
  • Investment follows Trump’s push for domestic chip production
  • Trump threatens 25% tariffs on foreign-made chips

Catenaa, Tuesday, March 04, 2025-Taiwanese chip giant TSMC will invest at least $100 billion in the United States to build advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities, President Donald Trump announced Monday, marking one of the largest private-sector commitments since his return to office.

Speaking at the White House alongside TSMC CEO C.C. Wei, Trump said the investment will fund the construction of five fabrication plants, mostly in Arizona, creating “many thousands” of high-paying jobs. The new pledge comes on top of TSMC’s existing $65 billion commitment to US chip production.

The move comes amid growing pressure on TSMC to shift production away from Taiwan due to concerns over supply disruptions in the event of a conflict with China.

One of the company’s three previously announced Arizona plants began production in late 2024.

Trump has also increased pressure on semiconductor firms by proposing 25% tariffs on foreign-made chips. His administration has already imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods, with additional levies on Canada and Mexico set to take effect Tuesday.

TSMC’s expanded investment will include three new fabrication plants, two advanced packaging facilities and a major R&D center. The company estimates it will support 40,000 construction jobs over the next four years.
