In Summary

  • TikTok is back on U.S. app stores after Trump delayed the ban until April 5

  • Apple and Google received assurances they won’t be liable for hosting the app
  • Trump now suggests potential compromises, including joint ownership

Catenaa, Friday, February 14, 2025 –TikTok has resumed availability on Apple and Google app stores in the United States after President Donald Trump delayed enforcement of a ban until April 5, a report by BBC said.

The popular video-sharing platform, used by more than 170 million Americans, was briefly removed last month as a congressional deadline approached.

Trump then issued an executive order granting a 75-day extension for TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to comply with a law requiring a sale to a neutral party.

The delay came after assurances from the Trump administration that Apple and Google would not be held liable for hosting the app during the extension period, according to a Bloomberg report.

The ban, initially signed into law by former President Joe Biden, was driven by concerns that TikTok could be used by China for surveillance and political influence—claims that both Beijing and TikTok have denied.

The US Supreme Court upheld the law, which received bipartisan support in Congress.

Trump recently suggested potential compromises, including joint ownership or a sale to figures like Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison or billionaire Elon Musk.

ByteDance is yet to announce whether it will sell TikTok’s US operations, setting up a high-stakes legal and business battle before the April deadline.
