Catenaa, Monday, January 20, 2025- TikTok began restoring services Sunday after President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to extend the timeline for enforcing a law banning the app unless ByteDance divests its US operations.
Trump cited the app’s popularity and its role in benefiting small businesses as reasons for his decision, saying, “Frankly, we have no choice. We have to save it.”
TikTok, used by 170 million Americans, thanked Trump for providing clarity to service providers, enabling restoration efforts. Although partial functionality has returned, the app remains unavailable for new downloads on US app stores as of this news is reported.
The announcement marks a reversal for Trump, who attempted to ban TikTok during his first term over data security concerns.
He now advocates for a joint venture with 50% U.S. ownership to address national security issues while maintaining access for users and creators.
However, some Republican lawmakers criticized the reprieve. Senators Tom Cotton and Pete Ricketts stated, “ByteDance must agree to a sale that severs all ties with Communist China.”
TikTok’s temporary restoration comes amid tense US-China relations and increased scrutiny of Chinese-owned apps. ByteDance has yet to confirm compliance with divestment demands, while US officials continue to stress national security concerns.
Trump is expected to issue an executive order Monday formalizing the extension and outlining terms for TikTok’s continued operation.
