Menlo Park, California, Friday, August 04 – Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Friday that the company’s Threads app will soon have search and web functions.
Zuckerberg made the announcement in a post on Threads, a short-form messaging app that is designed for close friends and family. He said that the new features are “coming in the next few weeks.”
Threads was launched in July 2023 and has quickly become one of Meta’s most popular apps. The app has over 100 million users and is growing rapidly.
Advertisers and creators have told CNBC that in order for Threads to become an important service, the real-time messaging app needs to have features that make it easier to search for trending topics and to find previous posts. And being able to access Threads on the web is particularly important if Meta wants to truly compete with X, which has long been popular on desktops for people at work.1
The addition of search and web functions will make Threads more competitive with other social media platforms, such as Twitter and Instagram. Search will allow users to find specific posts and conversations, while web access will allow users to access Threads from any device.
Zuckerberg said that the new features are “part of our effort to make Threads the best place to connect with the people you care about.”
Industry leaders have reacted positively to Zuckerberg’s announcement.
“This is a great move by Meta,” said social media consultant Matt Navarra.
“Threads is a great app, but it is missing some key features. The addition of search and web access will make it much more competitive.”
“This is a sign that Meta is serious about Threads,” said tech analyst Ben Thompson.
“They are investing in the app and making it more competitive with other social media platforms.”
It remains to be seen whether the addition of search and web functions will be enough to make Threads a mainstream success. However, the move is a positive step for the app and could help Meta attract more users.
In addition, industry leaders see this as a development in the right direction.
“They are investing in the app and making it more competitive with other social media platforms,” tech analyst Ben Thompson, said in his post.
