Catenaa, Wednesday, March 19, 2025-Tesla sales in Germany plummeted 76% in February as the electric vehicle maker faced backlash over CEO Elon Musk’s political ties and increasing competition in Europe’s biggest economy.1
According to the German Federal Motor Authority, Tesla sold just 1,429 vehicles last month despite a 31% rise in overall EV sales. Year-to-date, Tesla’s sales in Germany have fallen 71%, while in neighboring France, they have dropped 44%.
Musk’s public support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in February’s elections has sparked controversy. The party finished second, but incoming Chancellor Friedrich Merz has vowed not to collaborate with them. The political fallout, coupled with Tesla’s US ties, has fueled protests against the automaker across Europe and the United States.
Production setbacks have also played a role in Tesla’s struggles. The company temporarily suspended manufacturing at its Berlin Gigafactory to rework assembly lines for an updated Model Y, slowing deliveries.
Meanwhile, competitors, particularly Chinese automakers, have gained ground in key markets. Tesla’s difficulties in Europe mirror a 70% sales drop in Australia last month, adding to its global woes. The company’s stock has fallen 50% in four months, though it rebounded slightly in recent days.
Musk has not directly addressed the European challenges but has pledged to double Tesla’s US production within two years, aligning with Trump administration policies.
