Catenaa, Monday, January 13, 2025 – Telegram is expanding its Web3 footprint by enabling users to transform digital gifts into tradable NFTs through The Open Network (TON). The feature, announced in the messaging platform’s first 2025 update, allows users to upgrade over 20 digital gift items, such as animated artworks and custom messages, into NFTs using Telegram Stars, the platform’s in-app currency linked to Toncoin (TON).

The process involves paying a small fee in Stars to cover blockchain costs. Once converted, these NFTs acquire unique traits designed by Telegram artists, including custom backgrounds and icons. Users can trade their Telegram NFTs on secondary TON marketplaces, such as Getgems.

Telegram first introduced gifts in October 2024, showcasing them as animated tokens for profile customization. The latest NFT integration reflects Telegram’s broader Web3 strategy, following the launch of TON Space, a self-custody wallet, and ad revenue-sharing initiatives payable in TON.

Telegram’s adoption of TON has propelled the blockchain into prominence, with Toncoin becoming the 15th-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Despite regulatory challenges that forced Telegram to divest from the project in 2020, the network has thrived under community-led development.

The Open Network’s ecosystem also includes mini apps and tap-to-earn games, which drew significant attention in 2024. As Telegram deepens its Web3 integration, TON’s prominence continues to grow, solidifying its role as a blockchain leader.

Telegram’s NFT conversion feature is now live, though some users report delayed access within the app.
