NEW YORK, Tuesday, January 16, 2024 – Shytoshi Kusama, the primary developer of the widely-known meme cryptocurrency Shiba Inu, unveiled the introduction of the .SHIB domain on Wednesday, January 10. This initiative aims to enhance Web3 interoperability and foster a more integrated ecosystem for projects associated with SHIB.
“We’re partnering with @ShibToken to apply for and obtain the .shib Top-Level Domain (TLD),” revealed internet domain firm D3 in a Dec. 19 X (formerly Twitter) post. 1
D3 has a particular emphasis on domains for the next generation, facilitating interoperability between Web2 and Web3.
Partnering with Unstoppable Domains, a company specializing in blockchain-based domain names, the .SHIB domain will enable users to create unique website addresses and decentralized website identities tied to their SHIB wallet addresses.
This streamlines access to decentralized applications (dApps) and websites within the SHIB ecosystem, potentially simplifying Web3 navigation for users.
Additionally, the integration of .SHIB domains with the SHIB wallet could potentially facilitate peer-to-peer transactions and communication directly through domain names, reducing reliance on traditional cryptocurrency addresses.
Although specific technical details regarding the implementation and schedule of the .SHIB domain are pending disclosure, the announcement underscores Shiba Inu’s dedication to extending its presence in the Web3 space and improving user experiences within its expanding community.
“Current Web3 names, like .crypto and .eth, don’t work natively with critical internet tools like web browsers and email because they don’t operate on the Domain Name System (DNS). Legacy Web2 Top Level Domains (TLDs), like .com and .net, operate on the DNS but don’t work natively with Web3 tools like wallets and digital identity,” Shiba’s website said. 2
