Catenaa, Friday, December 13, 2024 – Russian academics have announced that they have developed an artificial intelligence-powered tool designed to detect and combat illegal cryptocurrency mining, according to state-run TASS.
Researchers at St Petersburg State University claim the innovation is the first AI-driven system tailored to assist power companies in identifying unauthorized mining activities.
In collaboration with private firms Lartech and Energomera, the university has integrated AI technology into electricity meters.
The advanced “AI meters” analyze consumer behavior, monitor electrical signals, and flag irregular power consumption patterns that may indicate illicit mining operations, particularly in residential areas.
Lartech highlighted the tool’s dual benefits, saying that the AI-powered device advances a transparent economy and ensures safer energy systems. It not only identifies illegal power usage but also enhances network reliability.
Illegal crypto mining has posed significant challenges to Russia’s energy infrastructure, with miners often exploiting subsidized electricity rates.
To address this, Russian lawmakers have pushed for restrictions on miners’ access to such rates. Additionally, Novosibirsk authorities recently arrested a local official accused of running an illegal mining operation from his garage.
The university also partnered with Lartech on an anti-fraud system that uses smart meter data to detect tampering and other forms of energy theft.
