Accounts of Paris Hilton, CNN Targeted
SAN FRANCISCO, Wednesday, June 5, 2024 – Social media platform TikTok was targeted in a cyberattack today, media reports said.
The incident was initially reported by Semafor and Forbes, who described a zero-click account takeover campaign. This campaign involves malware sent through direct messages that can compromise brand and celebrity accounts without requiring any user interaction.1
However, the details of the attack and its scope remain limited.
“Our security team was recently alerted to malicious actors targeting CNN’s TikTok account,” TikTok spokesperson Jason Grosse said in a statement.
TikTok said in the statement that a “limited number” of accounts were compromised. The company said it is working with affected users to restore access and has implemented enhanced security measures.
The company also did not disclose the nature of the attack or the identity of the attackers.
This incident comes amid ongoing scrutiny of TikTok’s data security practices in the US.
The company says it will provide further updates as they become available.
Meanwhile, the BBC reported that TikTok is addressing a cyber-attack that targeted brands and celebrities, including Paris Hilton and CNN. 2
A TikTok spokesperson confirmed that Paris Hilton’s account was targeted but not compromised. Hilton, with over 10 million followers, is an active TikTok user.
However, CNN’s account was compromised.
TikTok said it is collaborating closely with CNN to restore access and enhance security measures for the account.
BBC said that CNN did not immediately respond to the BBC’s request for comment.
