Optimism Mainnet Adds Fault Proofs for Better Security

SAN FRANCISCO, Tuesday, June 18, 2024— Developers behind the Optimism (OP) blockchain project announced the successful deployment of “fault proofs” on the OP Mainnet on June 10, 2024. 1

This integration marks a significant step towards decentralization for the optimistic rollup network.

Fault proofs are a cryptographic mechanism that empowers users to directly dispute potentially fraudulent or incorrect transactions on the OP Mainnet.

Previously, users had to rely on the network’s operators to submit accurate transaction data to the Ethereum mainnet.

This advancement eliminates the need for a trusted third party when making ether and ERC-20 token withdrawals, further solidifying user control and security. The implementation of fault proofs is a collaborative effort within the Optimism ecosystem, involving teams from OP Labs, Base, and Sunnyside Labs. It was also approved through the project’s governance structure.

OP Mainnet leverages optimistic rollups, a technology that processes transactions off-chain (Layer 2) for faster and cheaper settlements before submitting them to the Ethereum mainnet (Layer 1) for finalization.

The rollout of fault proofs on OP Mainnet is just the first step. Other Optimism ecosystem chains, including Base, Metal, Mode, and Zora, are slated to receive the upgrade soon.

The ultimate goal for OP Mainnet is to achieve a fully decentralized “stage 2,” where the network is governed entirely by smart contracts without human intervention.
