Catenaa, Wednesday, April 23, 2025- OpenAI is reportedly in negotiations to acquire Windsurf, an artificial intelligence-assisted coding tool, for approximately $3 billion, according to a Bloomberg News report.

This would mark OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date, although the terms are not yet finalized, and the deal could still fall through.

Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, has gained attention for its AI-driven coding capabilities. Last year, it raised $150 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, boosting its valuation to $1.25 billion. The company was also in talks with investors such as Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst to further raise funds at a $3 billion valuation.

The deal signals continued investor enthusiasm for the AI sector, fueled by the rising adoption of AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and advanced AI agents. OpenAI, valued at $300 billion, is also in the process of raising up to $40 billion in a new funding round.

OpenAI has made previous acquisitions, including a purchase of the analytics startup Rockset last year, to enhance its enterprise products. Windsurf would expand OpenAI’s offerings in the coding tool space.

OpenAI declined to comment on the matter, while Windsurf did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
