Catenaa, Thursday, May 01, 2025- OpenAI is in advanced talks to acquire Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding platform, for about $3 billion, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.
If completed, the acquisition would mark OpenAI’s largest deal to date, as the company aggressively expands its portfolio in the artificial intelligence sector. Sources cited by Bloomberg said terms have not yet been finalized and talks could still fall through.
Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, recently explored fundraising options with investors including Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst at a $3 billion valuation. Last year, Windsurf secured $150 million in a round led by General Catalyst, valuing the firm at $1.25 billion.
OpenAI, best known for its ChatGPT platform, declined to comment on the potential deal. Windsurf has yet to respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
The move comes amid surging investor enthusiasm in AI technologies, spurred by the rapid adoption of chatbots, large language models and advanced AI agents. In March, OpenAI announced plans to raise up to $40 billion in new funding, seeking a valuation of $300 billion.
The Microsoft-backed AI giant has been active in mergers and acquisitions, notably purchasing search and database startup Rockset last year to strengthen infrastructure for its enterprise offerings.
A successful Windsurf acquisition would bolster OpenAI’s presence in the AI coding sector, pitting it against rivals like GitHub Copilot and Anthropic’s Codex-based tools.
