Netflix Sends Last DVD Ending its Mail Service

LOS ANGELES, Saturday, September 30: Netflix shipped its last DVD on Friday, September 29, marking the end of an era for the company that helped change home entertainment.1

Netflix now has about 238 million subscribers worldwide, and most subscribers watch content via streaming.(Q2 2021)2
The DVD-by-mail service now has fewer than 1 million subscribers. As of 2021, it had about 2 million.3

The DVD-by-mail service was launched in 1998 and allowed customers to rent unlimited movies and TV shows for a flat monthly fee. However, streaming has become increasingly popular in recent years, and Netflix announced in 2011 that it would stop adding new DVDs to its library.

The company has been winding down its DVD-by-mail service ever since, and the last DVD was shipped to a customer in California on Friday.
