Thursday, June 20, 2024 – Recall that the AI-powered feature of tracking a computer’s web data will not be initiated by Microsoft with the Copilot+PC launch on June 18, 2024, due to privacy risks; instead, it will be a preview with the WIP community, Reuters announced on June 15, 2024. 1
The user activities, starting from web browsing data to voice chats on a computer, could be tracked and stored for months for later usage, as featured on Recall.
The screenshots taken by Recall would be decrypted and accessible after verifying the user details mentioned in the blog post. The “photographic memory” can be deleted, disabled, or paused according to user preferences. 2
The new feature would be guided by the Secure Future Initiative (SFI), securing the user experience and building trustworthiness.
Recall will only be available as a preview on the Windows Insider Program (WIP), the public software testing platform for Windows clients to preview the coming features.
The new Windows PCs, like the Copilot+ PC, are not authorized for Recall’s tracking options but will soon unveil the required guidelines provided by Microsoft.
It is expected to launch Recall on Copilot+PC after receiving feedback from the WIP community’s trail session.
Meanwhile, the users said the Recall would lead to spying, and tech expert Elon Musk mentioned it would be a “Black Mirror episode”. 3
