MetaMask Launches First Crypto-Enabled Mastercard

LONDON, Wednesday, August 21, 2024- MetaMask, in collaboration with Mastercard and Baanx, on August 14 introduced the MetaMask Card, its payment card allowing users to directly spend cryptocurrency from their MetaMask wallets.

This pilot launch, available only in the EU and UK, marks a significant milestone in integrating blockchain technology with everyday commerce.

The MetaMask Card functions like a debit card, enabling real-time transactions without needing to transfer crypto funds to a bank.

Metamask said in its announcement. The announcement can be accessed here.

Users can make purchases wherever Mastercard is accepted, using digital currencies such as USDC, USDT, and WETH. This card aims to streamline the often cumbersome process of spending crypto, aligning with MetaMask’s mission to enhance financial autonomy.

The pilot program is limited to a few thousand users, who can check their eligibility by accessing the MetaMask Portfolio.
MetaMask said as the program progresses, it planned to expand the card’s availability to additional regions.

This launch is expected to accelerate crypto adoption by removing barriers to spending, offering a secure, cost-effective way for users to utilize their digital assets.
