LOS ANGELES, Monday, June 17, 2024 – The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) announced the acquisition of a digital artwork titled “Path to Xanadu” (2023) by the Chris Burden Estate. This film NFT (non-fungible token) marks LACMA’s first digital artwork acquisition and signifies the museum’s growing embrace of new artistic mediums.1
Path to Xanadu was created by TRLab in partnership with the Chris Burden Estate.
Described by the estate as “an educational and interactive homage to the artist,” the film takes viewers on a digital journey through a metaphorical cityscape inspired by Burden’s iconic works.
The piece references installations like LACMA’s “Urban Light” (2008), comprised of repurposed street lamps, and “Metropolis II” (1999), a kinetic sculpture featuring miniature vehicles and roadways.
The acquisition was made possible by a donation from Eva and Matt Zhang of Hivemind Capital, reports indicated.
LACMA’s ongoing relationship with the Chris Burden Estate allows the museum to expand its holdings of the artist’s work and explore the evolving landscape of contemporary art.
Path to Xanadu joins LACMA’s permanent collection, consolidating the museum’s commitment to fostering dialogue about the role of digital art in the 21st century, some analysts pointed out.
It also seen as an indication of the growing recognition of digital assets by traditional organizations.
