Kraken Moves Global HQ to Wyoming Amid Policy Shift

In Summary

  • Kraken moves HQ from San Francisco to Cheyenne, Wyoming
  •  Credits Wyoming’s crypto-friendly laws and Senator Lummis’ support
  •  Exited San Francisco due to safety issues in 2022
  •  Joins broader crypto trend of remote-first or HQ-free models

Catenaa, Monday, June 23, 2025-Crypto exchange Kraken has officially moved its global headquarters to Cheyenne, Wyoming, citing the state’s pro-crypto policies and regulatory clarity, more than three years after shutting down its San Francisco office.

The company, which has operated remotely since 2022, said Wyoming’s leadership on digital asset legislation and support from figures like US Senator Cynthia Lummis influenced its decision. Kraken praised the state’s “constructive regulations,” calling it an ideal environment for crypto innovation.

Lummis welcomed the move, saying it affirms Wyoming’s status as a national leader in blockchain policy. In 2022, Kraken exited San Francisco following reports of employees being assaulted near the office, with then-CEO Jesse Powell saying the city was no longer safe for staff.

Wyoming has positioned itself as a crypto haven with proposals for a state-issued stablecoin and a Bitcoin reserve, drawing companies like Custodia Bank and now Kraken. Custodia CEO Caitlin Long said the exchange is likely Wyoming’s most valuable firm today.

Kraken’s relocation reflects a broader industry trend as major players like Coinbase and Binance shift to remote-first models or operate without traditional headquarters, responding to growing regulatory tensions in states like California and New York.

Kraken did not confirm plans for a large on-site staff presence in Cheyenne. Cointelegraph said the company did not respond to requests for further comment.
