Keycard Launches Pre-Sale for Fully Open-Source Shell Wallet

In Summary

  • Keycard opens pre-sale for Shell, a fully open-source hardware wallet
  • Shell features air-gapped signing, multiple smart cards, and duress PINs
  • Device ensures unexportable keys, future-proof design and full transparency
  • Early adopters get discounted bundles and Status KARMA rewards

Catenaa, Thursday, May 01, 2025-Keycard, the hardware wallet venture backed by the Status team, announced Wednesday the pre-sale of Shell, its new open-source modular wallet.

Shell is designed to deliver unprecedented transparency and security, featuring interchangeable smart cards—dubbed Keycards—that enable users to manage multiple wallets securely. Early buyers can pre-order Shell, bundled with two Keycards, at a discounted rate before its global release in October 2025.

“Hardware wallets need a complete rethink,” said Guy-Louis Grau, project lead at Keycard. Grau emphasized that most current wallets compromise user trust with upgradable secure elements or exportable private keys.

Shell’s architecture ensures private keys never leave its EAL6+ certified smart cards, and its firmware is non-upgradable, offering users long-term assurance of device integrity.

Key features include fully air-gapped transaction signing via QR codes, multiple stealth Keycards for backup security, duress PINs for protection under coercion, and compatibility with major Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets like MetaMask, UniSat, and BlueWallet. Shell’s casing is also customizable and 3D-printable.

Shell’s future-proof design includes a replaceable battery and upgradable Keycards, enabling adaptation to evolving cryptographic standards.

Pre-sale participants will also earn Status Network KARMA rewards, incentivizing early adoption in the growing ecosystem.

Shell aims to set a new industry benchmark in transparency, modularity and user control over digital assets.
