Catenaa, Tuesday, July 22, 2025-Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Digital Economy has endorsed a new civic token project, calling it a milestone in national identity and digital innovation as the country advances its Web3 ambitions.
In a statement released Saturday, William Kabogo, who heads the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MICDE), praised the launch of the Kenya Digital Token ($KDT), which debuted on the Solana blockchain.
He described it as a private initiative aligned with national transformation goals and a symbol of civic participation.
Kabogo said the project demonstrates the potential of public-private collaboration to promote inclusion, pride and technological advancement. He encouraged citizens and the diaspora to support $KDT, which has been promoted online using the hashtag #Kenya_NDT.
The token, developed by independent Kenyan innovators, aims to boost financial access and digital literacy, especially in underserved areas like Kibera. Built on Solana for its speed and low-cost scalability, the token integrates features such as augmented reality learning, on-chain rewards, and pre-installed wallets to onboard millions into the digital economy.
The MICDE confirmed it is monitoring such developments and is open to supporting digital initiatives that prioritize citizen empowerment and responsible innovation. The ministry said future engagement with developers will guide strategic policy and regulatory alignment.
With a vision to integrate 55 million Kenyans into blockchain-based systems, $KDT is positioning itself as a key driver of national identity in the Web3 age.
