Kamala Harris mominated as His Replacement
Washington, Monday, July 22, 2024– As Joe Biden bowed out of the presidential race on Sunday, Kamala Harris, the first woman of Indian origin, was named to replace him in the 2024 US presidential race for Democrats.
Biden, 81, announced his decision to withdraw, stating it was “in the best interest of my party and the country.” He will serve the remaining six months of his term.
Shortly after his announcement, he endorsed Harris, who vowed to “earn and win” the nomination and to “unite our nation to defeat Donald Trump.”
A slew of senior Democrats, including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, have thrown their support behind Harris.
Buttigieg, who ran for president in 2020, praised Harris as the person to “take up the torch [and] defeat Donald Trump.” Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren also endorsed Harris, highlighting her readiness to “step up” against Trump.
The decision followed increasing calls for Biden to step aside after a faltering debate performance against Trump last month.
First Lady Jill Biden expressed her support for her husband’s decision, with her spokeswoman stating she remains his “biggest believer.”
In the hours following Biden’s announcement, Harris began sending fundraising emails, resulting in a significant surge in donations.
ActBlue, a platform for Democrat donations, reported raising over $27.5 million within the first five hours of Harris’ campaign launch.
Harris has been seen as instrumental in key Biden administration initiatives.
Harris has started reaching out to key Democrat officials, lawmakers, and governors to consolidate support for her candidacy.
Trump, now the oldest nominee in presidential history at 78, called for the next debate to be moved from ABC to Fox News.
Trump’s supporters, including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Greg Abbott, expressed confidence that he could easily defeat Harris in the upcoming election.
