New York, NY – November 30, 2023 –Global tech giant IBM today announced the expansion of its geospatial AI technologies to address critical environmental challenges.1

IBM said it is using AI applications to tackle a wide range of climate-related issues, leveraging its geospatial foundation model developed in collaboration with NASA.

Working alongside the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Hartree Centre in the United Kingdom, the focus lies on mapping urban areas conducive to tree planting, contributing to the alleviation of surface water flooding.

Another significant partnership with the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) is directed at the application of foundational models to map urban heat islands, identifying areas with notably higher temperatures than their surroundings.

Additionally, in collaboration with the Government of Kenya, IBM endeavors to harness the power of AI in supporting extensive reforestation initiatives throughout the country. These partnerships underscore IBM’s commitment to employing geospatial AI in addressing critical environmental challenges on a global scale.
