Grayscale Launches Dogecoin Investment Fund for Institutions

In Summary

  • Grayscale introduces Dogecoin Trust for institutional investors.
  • Provides regulated DOGE exposure without direct holdings.
  • Highlights rising institutional interest in meme coins.
  • Launch follows increased crypto ETF filings post-SEC leadership change.

Catenaa, Saturday, February 08, 2025 – Grayscale Investments has introduced a new Dogecoin investment fund, offering institutional investors exposure to the popular meme coin through a regulated financial product.

The Grayscale Dogecoin Trust, announced on Jan. 31, provides a structured way for accredited investors to gain access to DOGE without holding the asset directly. Dogecoin, a peer-to-peer digital currency derived from Litecoin, operates on a proof-of-work blockchain similar to Bitcoin but with lower computational demands and no supply cap.

Rayhaneh Sharif-Askary, Grayscale’s head of product and research, said Dogecoin has evolved into a “potentially powerful tool for promoting financial accessibility.”

The move highlights increasing institutional interest in memecoins, a sector that has historically been driven by retail traders.

The launch follows a surge in meme coin-related investment activity. In January, Osprey Funds and REX Shares filed to create exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for Dogecoin, Trump (TRUMP), and Bonk (BONK), signaling growing mainstream recognition of meme coins as an asset class.

Grayscale has been expanding its portfolio of single-asset crypto investment products, recently adding funds for Lido (LDO), Optimism (OP), and Aave (AAVE) while monitoring more than 35 other altcoins for future offerings. The firm, known for its Bitcoin (GBTC) and Ethereum (ETHE) trusts, manages nearly $35 billion in assets as of December 2023.

The fund launch coincides with shifting U.S. regulatory dynamics. Following the resignation of SEC Chair Gary Gensler on Jan. 20, firms have accelerated cryptocurrency ETF filings, with analysts predicting a more favorable environment for digital asset investment products.
