Mountain View, CA, October 26, 2024 – Google has announced a landmark agreement with Kairos Power to procure energy from small modular reactors (SMRs), marking the world’s first corporate purchase of nuclear energy from multiple SMRs.
The deal aims to provide 500 megawatts of 24/7 carbon-free energy to US grids by 2035, contributing to Google’s carbon-free energy and net-zero goals.
Kairos Power plans to bring its first SMR online by 2030, with further reactor deployments expected over the following years.
The technology, using a molten-salt cooling system and ceramic fuel, offers a safer, lower-pressure nuclear reactor design.
The deal is part of Google’s broader push for clean energy, supporting its global data centers and AI-powered operations. Google’s goal is to scale clean electricity technologies and create high-paying jobs in US communities.
Nuclear power, according to the US Department of Energy, has the highest economic impact among power sources.
The agreement will accelerate nuclear energy adoption, complementing renewable sources like wind and solar. This partnership follows Google’s earlier clean energy projects, including enhanced geothermal efforts launched last year.
