Catenaa, Thursday, June 18, 2025- A growing number of global exporters are abandoning the US dollar in favor of local and regional currencies, signaling a potential shift in global trade norms and raising alarms about the dollar’s long-standing dominance in international commerce.1

US importers report that suppliers abroad are increasingly demanding payments in euros, Chinese renminbi, Mexican pesos and Canadian dollars, citing volatility in the greenback as a key concern.

Paula Comings, head of currency sales at US Bancorp, said the shift is no longer marginal. “Now the vibe from overseas vendors seems to be, ‘Just give us our currency,’” she noted.

The move comes amid heightened uncertainty over Federal Reserve interest rate policy, compounded by geopolitical tensions and trade realignments among BRICS and emerging markets.

These nations have begun settling more transactions in their own currencies, accelerating what analysts describe as a growing trend of de-dollarization.

While the US dollar still underpins a majority of international settlements and reserves, its recent weakness, now hovering near its lowest levels since early 2022, has undermined confidence among exporters, especially those in commodity-heavy economies sensitive to price shifts.

Industry analysts warn that if the trend gathers pace, US companies may face higher transaction costs, less favorable terms, and added currency risk when conducting international trade. Financial markets are closely watching the transition as it could herald a major reshaping of global financial architecture.
