BRUSSELS, Tuesday, December 12, 2023 – The European Union has agreed on the world’s strictest rules for artificial intelligence, in a landmark move that could shape the development and deployment of the technology globally. 1
The AI Act, which was approved by EU lawmakers after months of negotiations, sets out a risk-based framework for regulating AI applications.
High-risk AI, such as facial recognition systems used by law enforcement, will be subject to the most stringent rules, including requirements for human oversight and transparency.
Lower-risk AI, such as chatbots used by customer service centers, will be subject to less stringent rules.
However, all AI applications will be banned if they are deemed to pose a serious risk to safety, health, or fundamental rights.
The AI Act It is the first comprehensive set of rules for AI to be adopted by any major jurisdiction, and it is likely to be copied by other countries around the world.
The AI Act is expected to come into force in two years’ time. Once it is in place, it will have a major impact on the way that AI is developed and deployed in the EU.
