New York, Sunday, November 10, 2024- Detroit will soon allow residents to pay taxes and city fees using cryptocurrency, making it the largest US city to adopt this payment option, it is learnt.
The new service, anticipated in mid-2025, will be powered by PayPal’s secure platform, aiming to enhance payment accessibility, especially for residents who prefer digital currencies or lack traditional banking access.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted the move as part of Detroit’s efforts to “build a technology-friendly environment that empowers residents and entrepreneurs.”
This initiative aligns with broader city goals to explore blockchain applications that could support civic transparency, data security, and streamlined services.
The city joins a growing list of crypto-forward US municipalities. Currently, three states — Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana — accept crypto payments at the state level, while smaller cities like Williston, North Dakota, and Miami Lakes, Florida, have adopted crypto payments for local fees. Detroit officials are also inviting blockchain entrepreneurs to propose civic tech solutions that could benefit Detroit’s services and economy.
This step is seen as a significant milestone for crypto’s adoption in public services, with other cities and states observing Detroit’s approach closely.
