Catenaa, Monday, April 28, 2025-China last Thursday (24) urged the United States to cancel all “unilateral” tariffs, pushing back against suggestions of ongoing trade talks and signaling a firm stance as Washington considers easing duties, a Reuters news report said.
Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yadong said the US must remove the tariffs if it genuinely seeks to resolve the trade war, adding, “The person who tied the bell must untie it.”
Despite repeated assertions by President Donald Trump that “direct contact” was underway, China’s Foreign Ministry insisted no negotiations had occurred and dismissed reports of progress as “false news.”
Reuters reported that the Trump administration was weighing a reduction of tariffs on Chinese goods from the current 145% to between 50% and 65%, citing a source familiar with the discussions.
Chinese officials also appealed for Washington to heed “rational voices” at home and abroad calling for de-escalation. Separately, Beijing hosted a roundtable with over 80 foreign firms, pledging support amid concerns about investment risks from US tariffs.
China’s central bank governor, Pan Gongsheng, reiterated China’s commitment to free trade at a G20 meeting, underscoring Beijing’s strategy to leverage multilateral frameworks.
With tensions still running high, China’s call for the US to reverse tariffs highlights the deep challenges ahead for any potential thaw in relations.
