Beijing, Thursday, September 19, 2024 – China and South Africa have pledged to deepen their cooperation within the BRICS framework, focusing on sustainable development and economic reform, reports said last week.
During South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s state visit to China on September 2, 2024, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss BRICS expansion and economic coordination among member nations.
Both leaders emphasized the “historic” nature of BRICS expansion and reaffirmed their commitment to using the group as a platform for fostering economic ties. The joint statement underscored the importance of economic reforms in international financial institutions, pushing for a greater representation of developing nations.
The discussion also focused on modernizing economies through cooperation in digital technologies, new energy sectors, and infrastructure projects. Xi and Ramaphosa stressed the importance of fair and inclusive economic practices to support global sustainable development.
BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, plays a vital role in shaping a more equitable global economic order, particularly for developing countries. As both nations continue to strengthen their collaboration, they aim to achieve more practical outcomes within the BRICS framework, enhancing trade and market access.
