Catenaa, Monday, April 21, 2025-Beijing China issued a stern warning Monday to countries seeking trade agreements with the United States that undermine Beijing’s interests, vowing to take retaliatory steps against those it accuses of “appeasement” in the escalating tariff war.
In a sharply worded statement, China’s commerce ministry said countries negotiating with Washington at Beijing’s expense would face “reciprocal countermeasures.”
The warning follows a wave of new tariffs, with the US imposing duties of up to 145 percent on Chinese goods, while China has responded with 125 percent tariffs on US imports.
“Appeasement will not bring peace, and compromise will not be respected,” a ministry spokesperson said, condemning countries that prioritize short-term gains through deals that disadvantage China.
“To seek one’s own temporary selfish interests at the expense of others is to seek the skin of a tiger,” the statement warned.
China accused Washington of stoking economic tensions, labeling its tariff policies as “unilateralism and protectionism” and warning that such actions threaten to erode global trade norms and stability.
Beijing also denounced the potential return to a world governed by “the law of the jungle,” where “the strong prey on the weak.”
US President Donald Trump said last week that talks were ongoing with China, expressing optimism about reaching a deal. However, Beijing has not confirmed any dialogue and continues to vow resistance, pledging to fight “to the end.”
