Canberra, Friday, September 06, 2024 – Australia has introduced a non-legally binding artificial intelligence (AI) framework aimed at ensuring ethical and responsible AI use.
Released Wednesday, the guidelines outline ten principles focused on risk management, transparency, human oversight, and fairness.
Though voluntary, the framework is modeled after international standards, especially the European Union’s. The guidelines are expected to influence future AI policies in Australia while addressing concerns about inconsistent approaches to AI governance across the country.
Fairness and non-discrimination are emphasized, particularly in sensitive sectors like healthcare and employment. The guidelines also stress privacy protection, ensuring AI systems comply with Australian privacy laws. Security measures are included to protect AI from unauthorized access or misuse.
Reports said that despite these efforts, some organizations may face challenges in understanding how to comply with the voluntary standards due to existing inconsistencies in AI practices across the country.
The framework seeks to provide a clearer path for government agencies and industries aiming to develop safe, responsible AI.
