CUPERTINO, Calif. Monday, May 20, 2024 – Apple is reportedly nearing a deal with OpenAI, a leader in artificial intelligence research, to bring new AI features to the iPhone, according to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the matter. 1

In March Bloomberg reported that Apple was in talks with Google to use Gemini AI on its devices. There were no further reports, however.

The potential partnership could see technology from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a powerful language model, integrated into iOS 18, Apple’s upcoming mobile operating system.

This move reflects Apple’s growing focus on artificial intelligence and its aim to compete more effectively in the field.

The details of the potential deal remain undisclosed, and neither Apple nor OpenAI have commented publicly on the reports.

However, Apple is expected to discuss its plans for artificial intelligence at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), scheduled for June 10.

If materialized, this potential partnership could significantly alter the AI landscape, with Google’s technology potentially powering features in Apple’s upcoming iOS 18.

Competitors like Samsung already leverage Gemini for advanced AI features in their latest devices.

For Google, integrating Gemini into iPhones would significantly expand its user base, potentially solidifying its position against rivals like Microsoft.

However, the potential benefits are likely to be met with regulatory scrutiny, considering the existing search agreement between the two tech giants.

Both Apple and Google are already under investigation for antitrust concerns in Europe and the US.

While an official announcement is not expected until Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

While Apple has its own internal AI development efforts, the company is reportedly looking to external partners to bolster its offerings, particularly Siri, its virtual assistant.

OpenAI is a research lab known for its advancements in generative pre-trained transformers, a type of AI that can hold conversations and generate human-quality text.

ChatGPT, its most well-known product, is a chatbot that can engage in discussions on a wide range of topics.
