Seattle, Washington, Friday, June 28, 2024 – In a move suggesting its entry into the competitive AI assistant market, Amazon is reportedly developing a new chatbot codenamed “Metis.” The project, according to sources familiar with the matter, aims to rival OpenAI’s popular ChatGPT. 1
The potential launch of Metis in September 2024, coinciding with Amazon’s annual Devices and Services event, could signal the tech giant’s renewed focus on AI development.
The chatbot, codenamed Metis, is powered by Amazon’s LLM named Olympus, trained on a vast dataset of two trillion parameters, double the capacity of GPT-4. This enhanced capability aims to enable Metis to deliver more human-like responses with improved contextual understanding and reasoning accuracy.
Metis, named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and deep thought, would be accessible through a web browser and leverage Amazon’s in-house AI model, Olympus.
This model reportedly boasts a massive two trillion parameter dataset, potentially exceeding the capabilities of its competitor.
Details about Metis’ functionalities remain scarce.
However, reports suggest it will share functionalities common to generative AI tools, including responding to text queries in a conversational manner, providing links to relevant sources, and even generating images.
Notably, Metis might utilize “retrieval-augmented generation” (RAG) technology, allowing it to access and process information beyond its initial training data, such as real-time stock prices.
This follows recent efforts by Google and Microsoft to establish their own generative AI assistants, highlighting the growing competition within the field.
Business Insider detailed Amazon’s response to perceptions that it is trailing in the race to develop generative AI. 2
Additionally, Metis is anticipated to function as an “AI agent,” evolving to perform tasks autonomously based on data, decision-making algorithms, and activity patterns.
