Catenaa, Tuesday, July 01, 2025- OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman said he spoke with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Monday to discuss the future of their AI partnership, confirming ongoing negotiations between the two tech powerhouses, according to a New York Times podcast published recently.
The call comes amid reports that Microsoft is reassessing its multibillion-dollar stake in OpenAI, its primary AI partner.
The Financial Times reported earlier this month that Microsoft may pause further investment talks if disagreements persist over issues such as the size of its future equity in the startup.
Microsoft has not responded to Reuters’ request for comment outside regular business hours. OpenAI also remained silent.
Microsoft and OpenAI have closely collaborated on integrating AI into core Microsoft products, with OpenAI models powering applications like Copilot and Azure services. A shift in ownership terms could impact both strategic direction and product rollout timelines.
Altman also revealed that he recently had a productive conversation with President Donald Trump about artificial intelligence and praised the former president’s understanding of AI’s global importance.
In January, Trump announced the Stargate initiative, a $500 billion private investment plan focused on AI infrastructure, backed by SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI.
The future of the Microsoft-OpenAI alliance is seen as critical to the U.S. maintaining its AI edge amid growing global competition.
