AirTags Tracking Sparks Lawsuit And Apple Accused of Lax Security in Stalking Cases featured

San Francisco, California, Monday, March 25, 2024 – A lawsuit filed in December 2022 accuses Apple of failing to adequately safeguard its AirTags, potentially enabling their misuse for stalking. 1

Apple has not yet issued a public response to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, brought by a group of plaintiffs, centers on privacy concerns surrounding the location-tracking devices.

Since of late, AirTags, small accessories designed to help locate lost items, have become a target for criticism.

The lawsuit contends that the technology can be easily repurposed for malicious tracking. Plaintiffs argue that AirTags’ ability to anonymously track a person’s location without their knowledge presents a significant privacy risk.

Specifically, the lawsuit criticizes Apple for not requiring AirTag registration or user verification during purchase.

Additionally, concerns are raised about the limited range of the “Find My” alert notification, potentially delaying warnings to potential victims of unwanted tracking.

However, the company previously maintained that AirTags incorporate features intended to deter stalking, such as audible alerts for unwanted tracking and a notification system that informs iPhone users of an unknown AirTag nearby.
