Catenaa, Thursday, June 12, 2025- NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang recently acknowledged at a public forum that Huawei had developed artificial intelligence hardware and systems capable of matching the US chipmaker’s top offerings, marking the first direct comparison made by the company’s leadership. In an interview with Bloomberg, Huang stated that Huawei’s new AI cluster, called CloudMatrix, rivals the capabilities of NVIDIA’s latest Grace Blackwell supercomputing systems.
He also said the Chinese tech firm’s custom AI chip – believed to be the Ascend 910C – is comparable to NVIDIA’s H200 AI accelerator, part of its premier Hopper lineup.
“Huawei is a formidable technology company. They’re not sitting still,” Huang said, noting that the Chinese firm has advanced rapidly despite facing strict US export controls and a tech trade war with Washington.
The remarks represent the most significant public validation yet of Huawei’s AI progress. Until now, NVIDIA had downplayed China’s ability to match its leading-edge chips.
Huang’s comments signal a shift in perception, acknowledging that China’s top tech player has reached parity in AI performance, at least within its domestic market.
The emergence of CloudMatrix as a scalable alternative to NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure poses a potential threat to the firm’s dominant position in China, where US sanctions have already limited chip exports.
Huang’s recognition of Huawei’s rapid development comes amid growing concerns in Washington over the acceleration of China’s AI capabilities and self-reliance in semiconductor technology.
