Catenaa, Tuesday, January 21, 2025 – President Donald Trump has appointed Mark Uyeda, a crypto-friendly Republican commissioner, as the interim chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) following Gary Gensler’s departure.
Uyeda, a critic of Gensler’s crypto policies, is expected to push for greater regulatory clarity in the crypto space.
Uyeda and fellow Republican SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce have expressed concerns over the SEC’s current approach, describing it as “untenable.”
They are reportedly considering reviewing pending enforcement cases and advancing a clearer regulatory framework for cryptocurrency markets.
Uyeda’s appointment marks a potential shift in the SEC’s stance on digital assets, as the agency now operates with a Republican majority. Previously, Uyeda served as counsel to several SEC commissioners and on the Senate Banking Committee.
Trump also announced Travis Hill as acting chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Hill recently called for clearer guidelines for banks working with crypto, signaling potential reforms across financial agencies.
These appointments come amid mounting criticism that US regulators are stifling the crypto industry. Observers expect the moves to reshape the regulatory landscape for digital assets under the new administration.
