Jeju Island Launches NFT Cards to Boost Tourism

Catenaa, Sunday, January 12, 2025 Jeju Island, a subtropical destination and autonomous province, plans to launch NFT-powered tourist cards named “Tao” in a bid to attract millennial and Gen Z travelers.

The Jeju Island Special Self-Governing Province announced it would begin issuing the digital cards, linked to non-fungible tokens, in the second half of 2025. The NFTs will provide discounts, travel subsidies, and incentives to encourage return visits. A pilot program is set to roll out for domestic visitors later this year.

The initiative will integrate with Jeju’s blockchain-based stablecoin, Tamna Jeon, first introduced in 2019 to stimulate the local economy. By leveraging this local currency, NFT holders will enjoy additional benefits, including discounts at popular attractions.

Jeju’s approach comes amid mixed fortunes for NFTs in South Korea, where stringent regulations have hindered their adoption in gaming and other industries. However, Jeju’s private blockchain network could circumvent these restrictions while revitalizing its tourism sector.

Jeju’s tourism push coincides with ongoing discussions in South Korea regarding regulatory reforms for NFTs. Some industry leaders argue that government restrictions stifle innovation, particularly in sports and gaming.

The Tao cards could position Jeju as a leader in digital tourism, blending blockchain technology with practical applications to draw global visitors.
