Catenaa, Tuesday, January 07, 2024 – Telegram’s latest update brings a feature enabling users to upgrade digital gifts into non-fungible tokens (NFTs), expanding their usability and marketability on blockchain platforms. According to a company blog post, users can now transform over 20 types of gifts, such as Jelly Bunny and Santa Hat, into unique, customizable collectibles.1

These upgraded gifts offer personalization options, including background colors and icons, ensuring distinct appearances. The process requires Telegram Stars, the platform’s digital currency, to cover blockchain fees. Telegram has already introduced more than 1,400 collectible appearances, with plans for future expansion. Users can trade or transfer these NFTs instantly, adding new dimensions to the platform’s digital ecosystem.
The update also enhances the user experience with message search filters, enabling refined searches across private chats, groups, or channels. Additionally, a built-in QR code scanner allows seamless navigation, and service messages now support quick reactions for better interaction.
However, the advancements come amid warnings from blockchain security firm Scam Sniffer, which recently uncovered scams targeting Telegram users. Cybercriminals are deploying fake verification bots, such as “OfficiaISafeguardBot,” to inject malware and gain access to victims’ crypto wallets. These schemes lure users into groups by impersonating prominent crypto influencers. Once trust is established, the malware extracts private keys, allowing scammers to drain funds from compromised wallets.
Telegram’s NFT-enabled gifts signal its growing integration with blockchain technologies, though heightened vigilance is crucial as scammers exploit such platforms to target unsuspecting users.
