Catenaa, Friday, December 20, 2024 –The Teamsters union staged a large-scale protest Thursday, targeting Amazon as it ramps up holiday deliveries.
Amazon delivery drivers at seven US facilities walked off the job after the company declined to negotiate a labor contract.
The Teamsters described the action as the “largest strike” in US history against Amazon, with demonstrations at “hundreds” of sites.
The union claims nearly 10,000 Amazon workers, including drivers employed by third-party firms, are represented under its efforts.
Amazon downplayed the strike, asserting, “What you see here are almost entirely outsiders — not Amazon employees or partners.”
The company also maintained that deliveries would remain unaffected.
Teamsters President Sean O’Brien criticized Amazon for “pushing workers to the limit,” blaming the company’s “insatiable greed” for the disruption.
In Germany, the United Services Union (ver.di) joined the strike, adding international pressure on Amazon.
The labor dispute highlights ongoing tensions at Amazon, where unionization efforts have faced fierce resistance.
While a Staten Island warehouse became the first Amazon site in the US to unionize in 2022, progress on contract negotiations has stalled.
The Teamsters, a prominent union with over one million members, has been gaining traction at Amazon locations.
Legal disputes over Amazon’s responsibilities as an employer remain a contentious issue, with labor officials siding with unions in some cases.
