  • Part of global efforts to regulate cryptocurrency and curb illicit activities

Wellington, Thursday, September 12, 2024-New Zealand introduced a new tax bill on September 8 that includes the introduction of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) crypto reporting framework.

Titled the Omnibus Taxation (Annual Rates for 2024-2025, Emergency Response, and Remedial Matters) Bill (Bill), had its first reading on 29 August 2024.1

The Bill makes a number of policy changes and remedial amendments.

This initiative aims to enhance transparency and compliance in the cryptocurrency sector by ensuring that crypto transactions and holdings are reported to tax authorities.

The framework aligns New Zealand with global efforts to regulate cryptocurrency and curb illicit financial activities, ensuring that taxpayers report their digital asset earnings. It also signals the country’s commitment to adapting to the growing importance of cryptocurrency in the global economy.

Under the new rules, exchanges and intermediaries will be required to report relevant data to tax authorities, similar to existing reporting requirements for traditional financial assets. This is part of a broader international trend aimed at closing gaps in the taxation of digital assets, which can often be used for tax evasion or money laundering.

With the new reporting requirements, analysts say that New Zealand is moving toward creating a more robust regulatory environment for cryptocurrency, while ensuring that tax obligations are met in the evolving digital economy.
