Elon Musk Defies Brazil's Order to Block X Amid Tensions

In Summary

  • Starlink defies a Brazilian court order to block X, risking its operating license
  • Brazil’s Supreme Court banned X for spreading misinformation
  • Tensions rise between Musk’s businesses and the Brazilian government

New York, Wednesday, September 04, 2024-Elon Musk’s Starlink has refused to comply with a Brazilian court order demanding it block access to the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter.

Brazil’s Supreme Court recently upheld the ban, citing X’s role in spreading what it called  “misinformation” about the country’s electronic voting system.

Despite the ruling, Starlink informed Brazil’s telecom regulator, Anatel, that it would not enforce the ban until its frozen local accounts are unfrozen.

However, Anatel commissioner Artur Coimbra said  the defiance could lead to sanctions, including the loss of Starlink’s operating license in Brazil.

The conflict escalates tensions between Musk’s business interests and the Brazilian government, particularly after Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Judge Alexandre de Moraes supported the ban, emphasizing the platform’s undermining of democracy.

Complicating the issue further Musk hinted that Dogecoin payments might help Starlink circumvent the freezing of its bank accounts in Brazil.

Starlink remains the only company in Brazil refusing to comply with the court’s ruling, deepening the standoff.
