Amazon AWS announces plans to invest in Taiwan

Seattle, Tuesday, June 18, 2024 – Amazon Web Services (AWS) on June 12 announced that it plans to invest billions of dollars in Taiwan over the next 15 years, expanding its cloud infrastructure presence in Asia.1

The company aims to establish data centers in Taiwan, further solidifying its global footprint in the region to meet the growing demand for cloud services.

AWS revealed that it will launch an infrastructure region in Taiwan by early 2025, which will enable organizations to leverage AWS technologies such as compute, storage, databases, analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

The new region will provide developers, startups, companies, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and financial services firms with a greater choice for running their applications and serving end-users from data centers situated in Taiwan.

The investment in Taiwan follows AWS’s recent plans to spend $9 billion on expanding its cloud services in Singapore and a $15 billion investment in Japan to build cloud capacity. This move aligns with the region’s growing significance in the global tech landscape, as analysts predict a strong outlook for Amazon citing an accelerated sales cycle and a significant shift in fiscal 2024 budgets towards infrastructure expenditure.

aThe expansion in Taiwan also comes amid rising geopolitical tensions. The Taiwan-China conflict has been identified as a “common risk” for tech giants like Amazon, highlighting the potential for a disruptive geopolitical event in China, which could impact access to crucial chip industries.

Other big tech companies have also been investing heavily in Asia in recent times. Microsoft has been making AI- and cloud-related investments in several Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, as it strengthens its presence in the region. Google recently announced a $2 billion investment in Malaysia and plans to build its first data center and cloud region in the country
